ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Painting while immersed in the wilderness is my passion. I’ve been camping and painting in the uninhabited countryside from Alaska to Siberia and the Everglades for more than 30 years.
Each summer I go deep into the wilderness of Alaska’s mountains to paint. I spend my time chasing light and dancing shadow, trying to capture the dynamic richness of this spare and wonderful northern landscape.
My memories of the summer provide a concrete grounding for the work I do during the winter, and the insights and technical experiences gained each winter are reflected in turn the next summer. The purity and intensity of this practice is the measure against which I compare the paintings, woodcuts and carved metal I do in the relative comfort of the studio.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
For two summer months each year, Bill Brody leaves his home on Florida’s Atlantic coast to paint in the mountains of Alaska. Brody was professor of art at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1967 to 2000, and department chair for nine of those years. He was subsequently a research specialist at UAF’s Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, exploring the dynamic interplay between art and virtual reality.
Brody earned an MFA from the Claremont Graduate School in painting and printmaking in 1967. His work has been seen in solo and group exhibitions nationwide, including appearances in several Los Angeles Printmaking Society’s biennial print exhibitions, and is held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Portland Art Museum, Arizona State University, Southern Illinois University, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, and the University of Alaska Museum of the North.
