ARTIST’S STATEMENT

ART SAVES
EXCEPT IN CASE OF FIRE
OR HURRICANE
OR PESTILENCE, OR WAR.
BUT AS SOON AS SAFE ENOUGH
THOSE OF US WHO MUST
WILL MAKE IT,
CERTAIN SURE WE OWN
ITS REALEST MEANING.
WHY DO I PAINT?
I PAINT FOR NEW INVENTION
TO WAKE MY ONLY EYES
AND TO SURPRIZE MY SCHEMATIC BRAIN,
PARADOXICALLY MIXING PAIN
WITH DIZZY GAIN. I PAINT
TO RECONFIGURE EMBLEMATIC CLUMPS
OR VISIT LOVELY ANCIENT FORMS
WHOSE COUSINHOOD WITH COMMON THINGS
RISES QUIZZICALLY FROM EACH
PAINTING BINGE. AND THEN
I NAME WHAT I HAVE MADE,
SLIPPERY CLUES FOR OTHER VIEWERS
SOUVENIRS FOR ME.

Originally from Boston, Lucinda Parker received a BA jointly from Reed College and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, in Portland, OR, and an MFA from Pratt Institute, New York. Her work has been exhibited at numerous one-person shows throughout the Pacific Northwest and nationally. The Portland Art Museum honored her with a mid-career retrospective in 1995, and the Boise Art Museum presented a one-person exhibition of her work in 2002. She was also included in the Bonnie Bronson Fellows twenty-year retrospective at Lewis and Clark College, Portland.  In 2013, she was among the first artists-in-residence selected by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation to work for a month in Captiva, Florida. The resulting painting is now in the collection of and on permanent public display at Reed College in Portland, purchased with the support of a grant from The Ford Family Foundation.

Parker’s work is part of collections throughout the Northwest. Major public collections include the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University, the Portland Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. Public commissions can be found at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland City Hall, and a federal courthouse in Bakersfield, California, among others. She is currently completing a major, four-part commission for the Washington State Arts Commission, to be installed at a Bureau of Labor and Industries facility in Tumwater, WA.
